Snorkeling in St Barts: The Best Beaches to Snorkel From Shore

Where to snorkel straight from the beach in St Barth: a local guide to Shell Beach, St Jean, Corossol and Gouverneur, and when a boat is worth it.

The clear, shallow lagoon at Grand Cul-de-Sac, St Barth

St Barth is not a reef destination on the scale of Bonaire. If coral gardens are the whole reason you travel, keep your expectations measured. But the snorkeling here is good, and the best of it sits right off the beach. You do not need a boat or a tour. You walk in.

Here is where to snorkel straight from the sand, from people who do it year-round.

First, a word on the conditions

Shore snorkeling in St Barth lives and dies by the conditions. On a calm, clear morning the water turns glassy and you see plenty. After a few windy days the same spot is stirred up and cloudy. So the rule is simple. Go in the morning, go when the sea is calm, and you will rarely be disappointed.

Shell Beach

This is the easiest snorkel on the island. Shell Beach sits right in Gustavia, so you can walk in from town, and the rocky edges of the bay hold fish. It is not the most dramatic snorkeling in St Barth, but it is reliable and sheltered, and you are two minutes from a drink afterward.

St Jean

St Jean has calm, shallow water, which makes it both the easy family beach and a relaxed place to snorkel. Head toward the rockier sections and around the outcrops, and you will find fish in clear, gentle water. It is good for beginners and for children.

Corossol

Corossol is the quiet one. It is a traditional fishing village with a sheltered beach that most visitors never find. When the water is calm and clear, it is a lovely, low-key snorkel, and you will usually have far more room than at St Jean. It is one of the island’s most underrated spots.

Gouverneur

On the right day, Gouverneur is the best of the four. The water can be wonderfully clear and the setting is hard to beat. The catch is that it is an open, exposed beach with no facilities, so it is only worth snorkeling when the sea is calm and the water has settled. Check the conditions before you commit to the drive down.

Practical tips

  • Bring your own gear. The wild beaches have nothing to rent, so pack a mask and fins or pick some up in Gustavia.
  • Reef shoes help on rocky entries.
  • Mornings are best: calmer water, better visibility, fewer people.
  • Look, do not touch. Much of the coastline is a protected marine area, so keep your distance from turtles and reef.

When a boat is worth it

Shore snorkeling is perfect for an easy hour. But the best underwater scenery around St Barth sits offshore, at the reefs, the small islets and Colombier, and you reach it by water. If snorkeling is a real priority for your trip, a half-day boat trip pays for itself.

Those four beaches will cover you for an easy snorkel on any calm morning. They are free, they are simple, and they are a short drive or walk apart.
