Shell Beach and Gustavia: The Beach in the Heart of St Barts
Shell Beach is the one St Barth beach you can walk to. Here is the easiest beach day on the island, plus the best spots in Gustavia for sunset.
Almost every beach in St Barth needs a car and a drive. Shell Beach does not. It sits a short walk from the center of Gustavia, the island’s harbor town. That makes it the easiest beach day on St Barth, and the best place to move from sand to sunset to dinner without ever hunting for a parking spot.
Shell Beach itself
Its official name is Anse de Grand Galet, but everyone calls it Shell Beach for the small shells worked through the sand. The water is calm and sheltered, there is a beach bar when you want one, and the rocks along the edges are worth a snorkel. It is not the wildest beach in St Barth. It is the most convenient one, and on a relaxed day that counts for a lot. One local note. Shell Beach catches sargassum seaweed now and then, so take a look before you settle in.
Why it wins for an easy day
The whole appeal is the location. You can spend the morning on the sand, walk five minutes into Gustavia for lunch and a look at the shops, come back for an afternoon swim, and stay for sunset, all of it on foot. No car, no parking, no driving the island’s hills. For a first day on St Barth, or a slow last one, it is hard to beat.
Sunset in Gustavia
Gustavia is where the island gathers for a sundowner, and Shell Beach faces the right way for it. Two local favorites as the light goes. Beef Bar has one of the best sunset settings in town, and the rooftop at Barry is just as good. Arrive a little before sunset, because the good tables fill up.
Beach, then dinner
Gustavia also has the densest restaurant scene on the island, which makes a Shell Beach day easy to extend into the evening. The one thing to plan for is booking. The best tables in town fill up well ahead in high season.
If the rest of St Barth is about driving out to find your beach, Shell Beach is the opposite. You walk down, swim, eat, and watch the sun go down. Keep it for the day you would rather not think about logistics.
