Saline Beach, St Barts: The Classic Beach Day, Done Right

Anse de Grande Saline is the beach people picture when they picture St Barts: a wide curve of pale sand behind a dune, with no buildings, no shade and nothing for sale. The car park, the walk over the dune, the sea, Le Tamarin for lunch, and the villas nearby.

Saline is the beach people picture when they picture St Barth: a wide curve of pale sand behind a dune, the sea in front, and nothing built on it. No restaurant, no bar, no shade, no music. You park, you walk over the dune, and the beach opens up. This page covers the practical side of a Saline day, which is the part the postcard leaves out.

Getting there and parking

Saline is at the end of a road on the south side of the island, and the approach over the dunes is one of the island’s views in itself. You park in the large car park, then walk about five minutes over the dune before the sea appears. Unlike Gouverneur, whose small clearing is often full after ten, Saline usually still has room, which makes it the easier of the two wild beaches for a late start. There is no bus for visitors here; a driver can drop you and agree a pickup time if you would rather not drive.

On the sand

Bring water and an umbrella, and take everything home with you again, because there are no bins, no toilets and nothing for sale, as on every wild beach on the island. Parts of the beach are relaxed about swimwear. The lack of shade is the thing people underestimate: by midday the dune offers none, so the umbrella is not optional, and the walk back to the car in the heat is part of the day. For families, Saline is an adventure for older children and hard work with toddlers; our guide to the family beaches has the easier options.

The water

Saline is an open beach, and it can pick up swell. Mornings are usually the calmest and most private time to swim, and the calm days are glorious. It is also one of the beaches that carries sargassum at times: in September 2026, Saline was among them: a snapshot, not a rule, and the sheltered beaches stay clearer. Check recent conditions before the drive in late summer.

Lunch: a garden, not a beach club

There is no restaurant on the sand, and that is the whole point of Saline. What it has instead, a short walk back from the beach, is Le Tamarin: a calm, leafy restaurant set in a garden, more shade and birdsong than music and crowd, and the natural pairing with a Saline morning. Walk over the dune early, swim, then come back for a long, slow lunch out of the sun. It is the quieter end of the beach-lunch scale, and our guide to the beach restaurants sets it against the clubs at St Jean.

Staying near Saline

A few small hotels and cottages sit back from the beach, and the hills around Saline hold villas with the bay below them. If a wild beach a few minutes from the door is the shape of your trip, this is one of the two places on the island to look. The villas in Saline are listed with their position.

Among the fourteen beaches, Saline is the classic St Barth beach day. Keep it for a morning, bring more water than you think you need, and let Le Tamarin take care of the afternoon.

FAQ

Common questions

How do you get to Saline beach?

By car to the large car park at the end of the road, then on foot: about five minutes over the dune before the sea opens up in front of you. The car park usually has room even after ten, when Gouverneur’s small clearing is full.

Is there anything on Saline beach?

Nothing at all: no buildings, no restaurant, no shade, no toilets and nothing for sale. That is the point of Saline. Bring water and an umbrella, and take everything home. Lunch is a short walk back from the beach, at Le Tamarin.

Is Saline beach good for swimming?

Yes on calm days, with the caution that it is an open beach that can pick up swell, so mornings are usually the calmest. It is a five-minute walk from the car with no shade and open water, which makes it an adventure for older children and hard work with toddlers.

Does Saline get sargassum?

Sometimes. The September 2026 count had Saline among the beaches carrying weed; treat that as a snapshot, not a rule. The sheltered beaches stay clearer, so check recent conditions before the drive in late summer.
